The Cardinals escaped a jam in the bottom of the sixth inning, scoring three runs to take an 8-3 lead. The Dodgers have not been able to score since then and the game has now gone into extra innings tied at 3.
The “st louis cardinals baseball” is a game between the St. Louis Cardinals and the Los Angeles Dodgers. The game was played on August 16, 2018 at Busch Stadium in St. Louis Missouri. The score was tied 4-4 until the ninth inning when the Cardinals scored two runs to win 5-4.

Manager Mike Shildt was so confident in Adam Wainwright in the top of the sixth inning that he basically gave up on the half-inning, allowing his pitcher to bat with two outs to keep him in the game. Wainwright got one out in the bottom of the sixth and then gave up a slow-bouncing infield single to the second hitter he faced. After then, he was removed from the game. After all, why not?

Brusdar Graterol was the Dodgers’ third pitcher of the night, coming in after Joe Kelly was pinch-hit for in the bottom of the fifth, and he got both Yadier Molina and Edmundo Sosa to ground out extremely quickly and weakly.
Graterol’s first pitch to Harrison Bader struck him square in the left shoulder, sending him to first base for the second time in the game, and Cardinals Manager Mike Shildt decided to keep his starting pitcher in the game by allowing Adam Wainwright to bat for himself. Wainwright was hit by a pitch on his first pitch, but he’ll return to throw the sixth inning. That seems to be a fair bargain, given his throwing style.

To begin the half-inning, Cody Bellinger, who used to be excellent, struck out on four pitches. Pinch-hitter Luke Raley was called up to replace relief pitcher Joe Kelly, who was done for the night, and Raley struck out on four pitches as well. Mookie Betts missed the message, as he was thrown out after just two pitches, grounded out to third to finish the inning.
Adam Wainwright has pitched five innings and had a fantastic outing to continue his flashback season. He could potentially throw another inning or two at 83 pitches, but he’s scheduled to bat fourth in the sixth, so the Cardinals will have to make a difficult choice.

The Dodgers have entered their bullpen much sooner than anticipated. WAY, WAY, WAY, WAY, WAY, WAY, WAY, Manager Dave Roberts, on the other hand, has been pleased with his choice so far.
Tommy Edman continued to be a thorn in Max Scherzer’s side by leading off the inning with his second hit, a single that just missed center field. Paul Goldschmidt worked a six-pitch walk, prompting a discussion on the mound and some action in the bullpen for the Dodgers. Tyler O’Neill was struck out on five pitches by Scherzer, who sent a 95-mph fastball past him for strike three. Scherzer, on the other hand, was done. After 94 pitches and four and a third innings, Roberts walked out to the mound and took the ball away from his team’s co-ace.
With one out, Joe Kelly took over for Scherzer, inheriting runners at first and second. On a grounder to Justin Turner, he got a fast force out at third. Kelly got out of the jam by striking out Dylan Carlson, despite a wild pitch moving Goldschmidt to third.
Scherzer’s final line for the day was 4 1/3 innings, 3 hits, 1 earned run, 4 strikeouts, 3 walks, and 1 batter hit.
If the Dodgers’ bullpen fails in the next inning or two, there will be a lot of second-guessing of Roberts.
When it came time to change pitchers, Dave Roberts extended his hand to receive the ball from Max Scherzer. Max, on the other hand, refused to give him the ball. Hilarious. pic.twitter.com/v7L7JZekPE

Due to his pitch count reaching 94 and the Cardinals having two runners on base, Max Scherzer is out of the game with one out in the fifth inning. In a move that may make Manager Dave Roberts seem smart or stupid, Joe Kelly is coming in as a reliever.

The Dodgers had been consistently pressuring Adam Wainwright for outs in the previous several innings, and Justin Turner was able to retaliate by slamming a 2-2 curveball into the Dodgers’ bullpen in left field for a single homer that tied the game at 1-1.
There was no rally after that. Wainwright bounced back immediately after the homer, striking out catcher Will Smith on three pitches and punching out A.J. Pollock on five pitches. Matt Beaty came up next, and he popped out to the catcher to finish the inning. (At some point during the game, Albert Pujols is a baseball player who plays for the Los Angeles Dodge will pinch bat for Beaty or the pitcher, which will be a huge event… but not yet.)
With a home run to left, Justin Turner ties the game at 1-1.
Turner’s smash into the bullpen jolted the Dodger Stadium crowd awake.

Yadier Molina grounded out on a ball that would have been a single had the shift haters had their way. For the second out, Edmundo Sosa grounded out weakly to pitcher Max Scherzer. But Harrison Bader ruined Scherzer’s perfect inning effort by battling through an eight-pitch plate appearance that concluded with Bader getting hit by a pitch and advancing to first base.
Fortunately for the Dodgers, this brought up Adam Wainwright, who, despite having a silver slugger in his trophy case, is still a pitcher. He was hit by three pitches, all of which he swings and misses.

Adam Wainwright was in serious danger due to control issues, communication issues with his catcher, and a terrible defensive error by his shortstop, but the veteran pitcher performed a Houdini-like escape act by forcing an inning-ending double-play with no runs scored.
Wainwright had immediately placed himself in trouble by walking Cody Bellinger on five pitches to begin the half-inning. After falling down 3-1 to the overmatched Max Scherzer, he allowed the opposing pitcher to sacrifice bunt Bellinger to second.
Mookie Betts’ line drive up the center should have been caught by Edmundo Sosa, who grabbed his glove on the ball but lost it (a play that was somehow ruled a single). With one out, the following hitter, Corey Seager, walked, loading the bases. The Dodgers seemed to be on their way to tying the game, but Wainwright forced a grounder from Trea Turner, resulting in a double-play and allowing the Cardinals to escape with a win.

With a single to right-center, Paul Goldschmidt started the inning. Nolan Arenado grounded into a fielder’s choice to remove Goldschmidt from the basepaths after Tyler O’Neill struck out on three pitches (looking utterly helpless on a two-strike slider). Dylan Carlson was left to finish the inning, and he grounded out to first to complete the half-inning.
Overall, Max Scherzer put up a strong performance.

Will Smith used a nine-pitch at-bat to try to single-handedly raise Adam Wainwright’s pitch count. Even though it ended with a groundout to second (and a brilliant play by Tommy Edman), Wainwright had a rough start to the inning.
A.J. Pollock had an easier time with the third pitch he saw, popping out to shortstop. That brought up Matt Beaty, who is filling in for the injured Max Muncy at first base. To finish the inning, Beaty, a left-handed batter, flew out to the warning track in right.

In the future, keep a watch on Max Scherzer’s pitch count. It has already reached 43.
When he began the second inning with a 95-mph fastball past a flailing Edmundo Sosa for strike three and his first strikeout of the game, the experienced starter looked more like himself. But he followed it up with a Harrison Bader six-pitch walk. He then worked up a full count against Adam Wainwright, who used a two-strike sacrifice bunt to advance Bader to second. But that was all for the half-inning, as Tommy Edman flew out to left to finish it.
St. Louis is making Scherzer work, to put it kindly. The good news for Dodgers fans is that Scherzer has been permitted to throw 100 pitches or more 16 times this season between Washington and Los Angeles.

With a 1-0 lead, Adam Wainwright let up an infield single to Mookie Betts in the first inning, but then caught Corey Seager looking at a sinker for a called third strike. Betts was erased at second base on Trea Turner’s grounder to shortstop Edmundo Sosa (the ultra-quick Turner was easily safe at first), and Wainwright helped himself by making a spectacular catch on Justin Turner’s liner up the middle to finish the inning. It’s neat and tidy.

This was hardly the start Max Scherzer had hoped for. With a 1-2 count on leadoff hitter Tommy Edman, he went ahead, but Edman singled to right. Then Edman snatched second place. Home plate umpire Joe West squeezed Scherzer on a possible strike three to Paul Goldschmidt, and then walked Goldschmidt one pitch later. Tyler O’Neill hit a sacrifice fly to right field, but Edman tagged up and advanced to third.
Scherzer threw a wild pitch with runners on first and third and one out, allowing Edman to score easily from third and Goldschmidt to move to second. Although Scherzer came back to retire Nolan Arenado on a fly ball to left, Corey Seager’s mistake loaded the bases. When Yadier Molina flew out to center on the first ball he saw, Scherzer was able to get out of the jam. Overall, it was a tedious 19-pitch inning with little damage.
The Cardinals are up 1-0 after a wild pitch allows a run to score.
Tommy Edman reached base on a single, stole second, moved to third on a popup, and scored on a wild pitch.

As you watch baseball on TV, pay careful attention to the first row behind home plate, which is shaded toward the Dodgers’ dugout: Juan Soto, a Washington outfielder and NL MVP contender, is seated next to his agent, Scott Boras. Soto is also dressed in a Trea Turner jersey. But don’t expect Soto to choose a side: Turner wore this jersey throughout his tenure with the Nationals.

LOS ANGELES (CBSLA) – With Adam Wainwright starting tonight’s wild-card game and Yadier Molina at the bat for St. Louis, it would be appropriate if veteran Cardinal Albert Pujols appeared in a big moment against his old club, particularly since Hollywood is just a fly ball or two away from Dodger Stadium.
In 2006 and 2011, the three won the World Series together in St. Louis, and they are still good friends.
So, how awesome would it be…
During Tuesday’s practice here, Wainwright remarked, “Nothing about that team over there right now is cool to us.” “Albert is a wonderful buddy, but right now we’re battling,” he said. We’ll make amends afterwards. But for now, we’re battling.”
His comments mirrored what Pujols said about this matchup last week.
“I still have a lot of respect for that organization and a lot of the people on that side,” Pujols said, “but once we cross that line, it’s about a job.” “It’s all about assisting your team to victory.” After everything is said and done, we’re still friends with mutual regard.”
Wainwright brought out another intriguing issue.
“Earlier, I was watching ‘Last Chance U,’ and one of the guys marveled at how quick the other quarterback was,” Wainwright remarked. “And the coach yelled at him, ‘Don’t be a fan,’” he added.
“We can’t support that other team right now.”

Now it may be revealed: Dodgers manager Dave Roberts admitted that he lost a wager with his buddy and former Giants manager Bruce Bochy that San Francisco would break Los Angeles’ eight-year winning streak in the National League West. “He had the Giants, I had the Dodgers, and I lost a beautiful bottle of Bordeaux and a meal.”

Edmundo Sosa is a game-changer in terms of speed. On Wednesday, he will replace Paul DeJong at shortstop. Credit… Associated Press/Philip G. Pavely
LOS ANGELES (CBSLA) – Controlling St. Louis’ running game will be a major task for Dodgers starting pitcher Max Scherzer and catcher Will Smith tonight.
With 89 stolen bases this season, the Cardinals were sixth in the majors. According to Statcast, three Cardinals are in the top 50 in MLB in sprint speed (feet per second): Edmundo Sosa (13th, 29.8), Tyler O’Neill (15th, 29.7), and Harrison Bader (16th, 29.7). (20th, 29.5). Tommy Edman, the Cardinals’ leadoff hitter, is ranked No. 52, barely outside the top 50.
Sosa will start at shortstop instead of Paul DeJong, according to Cardinals manager Mike Shildt, who will place him seventh in the order. Bader bats ninth and plays center field, while O’Neill bats third and plays left field.
Starting Sosa over DeJong was a “difficult choice,” according to Shildt. “I felt like a lot of factors went into it, but in the end, I felt that Sosa deserved the chance.”
Sosa, according to Shildt, “is a major reason why we’ve gotten to where we are.”
“It’s a smart ballclub,” remarked Dave Roberts, the manager of the Los Angeles Dodgers. “They’re extremely opportunistic and aggressive,” says the narrator.
Because rival teams prefer to run against the Dodgers, it makes logical to prioritize speed against them. The Dodgers allowed 108 stolen bases and caught 34 of them this season, with the 142 attempts leading the league.

‘Listen, it’s hardly rocket science,’ says the narrator. You’ve probably seen men in this position towards the conclusion of their careers. I’m quite aware that I’m no longer the player I once was. That is something I believe everyone is aware of. ‘However, I believe I can still contribute.’
Albert Pujols
LOS ANGELES (CBSLA) – It was a sold-out crowd, a historic occasion, and the baseball was soaring into the sky in a straight line into October. Albert Pujols stood there in a uniform he had never planned to wear, at a place he had never expected to be. The scream that concluded a Los Angeles evening last week was ignited by his teammate Corey Seager’s two-run bomb. And there was Pujols, leading the celebrations from the Dodgers’ bench.
Pujols used to have his own stretch-run limelight back when he was known as The Machine. Those huge moments now largely go to others, while Pujols concentrates on his one nightly plate appearance, which is typically against a left-handed reliever and is carefully arranged.
In May, four days after his unceremonious release by the Los Angeles Angels and in the last season of a 10-year, $240 million deal, the Dodgers signed Pujols. He has exceeded expectations in his very specialized position, slamming lefties for a.306 hitting average and leading the Dodgers with 12 home runs and 38 runs batted in.
His teammates remark on how happy he is. And now, a guy who once dominated Octobers for the St. Louis Cardinals is back in the playoffs for the first time since 2014, and his first test will be against his old team, the Cardinals, on Wednesday at Dodger Stadium. His tumultuous time with the Angels is beginning to fade from the story.

The Dodgers decided to start lefty Matt Beaty at first base, use Cody Bellinger’s defensive skills in center field, and leave Albert Pujols as a pinch-hitting weapon off the bench in Wednesday night’s wild-card game against St. Louis with Max Muncy out due to a dislocated left elbow suffered in Sunday’s season finale against Milwaukee.
Dodgers Manager Dave Roberts remarked, “It begins with who’s on the mound.” He was alluding to his own ace, Max Scherzer.
Scherzer is a “high-strikeout guy,” according to Roberts, and St. Louis’ lineup has a “high number of right-handed hitters.” As a result, Roberts stressed the importance of defense in center field and at first base, as well as the fact that he expects most of the ground balls the Cardinals’ batters will hit to the left side of the infield, where veteran mainstays Corey Seager (shortstop) and Justin Turner (third base) will be waiting.
