Experts have called for a ‘immediate’ probe as numbers indicate over 10,000 more individuals have died from non-Covid ailments in the previous four months than typical.

The Office for National Statistics reports that in the last 18 weeks, England and Wales have recorded 20,823 more fatalities than the five-year average.
Of them, 9,292 fatalities (or 45 percent) were unrelated to the coronavirus, whereas 11,531 were.
‘We really need to understand what’s going wrong,’ according to one health specialist.
Professor Carl Heneghan, head of the University of Oxford’s Centre for Evidence-Based Medicine, told The Telegraph that thousands of unnecessary deaths were due to ‘possibly curable’ illnesses such ischemic heart disease, liver cirrhosis, and diabetes.
‘This goes beyond simply looking at raw statistics and death certificates,’ he said. We need to investigate if these fatalities might have been avoided.

‘This might be the result of a lack of preventative treatment during the epidemic, as well as what occurs thereafter.’
‘We immediately need to understand what’s going wrong and conduct a root-cause analysis to see what changes can be taken to avoid more fatalities.’
Toward the end of the year, the number of deaths from all causes tends to rise.
However, the overall number is still higher than the five-year average for the same period from 2015 to 2019, according to professor of applied statistics Kevin McConway.
The number of fatalities in private homes is also 40.9 percent more than the five-year norm, with “most of the additional deaths not using Covid-19,” according to the report.
More individuals are projected to die this year, according to the Institute and Faculty of Actuaries, with recent non-Covid fatalities connected to the country’s aging population.
It comes as ambulance response times in England have reached new highs, with industry officials conceding that patient care is being jeopardized.
